26-04-11: My shed

I build my kayak in our garage. It is a nice room where I have the space to build a kayak. On the other hand this means that there is no room for our car, but thats normal. There is always some kind of  project going on... At the end of the garage is my shed. A perfect space where I can tinker with my projects. It is a small room but every space is well used and I have the garage for more bulky projects.

25-04-11: Stern hardwood reinforcement

I have submerged the hardwood strips for a couple of hours to make them more flexible. After that the strips are glued and strapt in place.  I have used polyurethane glue. I dont think I will do that again if there comes another time. It is too difficult to sand and smooth,

22-04-11: Shavin the hull

I'm now planing the hull: Or more precisely planing the edges between the strips.

21-04-11: Hardwood on the bow

I have glued two strips of hardwood on the bow as reinforcement. Now they just need some planing and sanding.

I started to plane the edges where the strips meets. I alternate between my tiny modelmaking   plane and the stunning old plane Ihave inherited from my grandfather. The small plane is a little too small and awkward to hold and the big old plane is a little too big.
I have started to look around for a suitable sized plane ... (you cannot have too many tools ...;-))

The bow reinforcement is taking shape.

As shown below I have sanded the bow preparing for mounting a hardwood reinforcement on the bow.

13-04-11: Even more strips

The hull is starting to take shape and I really enjoy the look of it. :-)

Some of the strips has to be bended the the "wrong way" and I struggle to hold them in place. To try to make it easier i have build a box for steaming the strips.

The steaming of strips worked fine, but it was only necessary to steam a few strips. For the rest of the strips I just used some "gentle violence"

05-04-11: Even more strips

I am now well away in placing the strips for the hull. Here is the bow shown where the strips on turn comes from left and right.

In the buildingprocess you cannto have to many clamps.

03-04-11: Starting to place the strips

Now I have started to place the strips. I drill a small hole (2mm) and place a screew in each strip to hold the strip. I hope the regular placed holes will not scar the look to much. Time will tell.

Below is my setup for scarfing the strips shown. It works perfectly. I just push the strip towards the sanding disc and they get the same angle every time.
